Testosterone - NOT just for muscles and sex!

Back of Hercules in main square in Florence, Italy.

Greetings!

More and more people today are familiar with testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) being used for both men and women. And most people are also aware of some of the health and relationship benefits associated with TRT, including improved libido and sexual functioning, workout gains, and increased energy.

But what is not widely know is that TRT can attenuate nearly every autoimmune disease and inflammatory condition under the sun.

Androgens, including DHT, DHEA, and Testosterone are powerful anti-inflammatories, and also hugely effective at maintaining and modulating (regulating) the immune system.

“MODULATING” is the key word here.

In conventional medicine, practically any disease of autoimmunity is treated the same way: mainly by SUPPRESSING the immune system, which basically means completely squashing the immune system so that it can’t respond at all.

Does this work? Yes, unbelievably so in fact.

Is it always the most appropriate therapy? Absolutely not.

Immunosuppressants not only destroy the immune system, but generally have black box warnings for causing strokes, blood cots, heart attack, cancers, and an INCREASE IN DEATH.

Of course there are many lifestyle factors and changes that must be made with autoimmune diseases, but if we’re speaking strictly about medicine and medications, what we’re really looking for is immunomodulators.

Immunomodulators are things that tell the immune system to shift back to a more neutral state, NOT a suppressed state.

And TESTOSTERONE is one of those key immunomodulators!

Currently, the literature recognizes testosterone’s impact on the following diseases:

  1. Psoriasis

  2. Asthma/COPD

  3. Rheumatoid Arthritis

  4. Crohn’s Disease

  5. Multiple Sclerosis

  6. Lupus

Essentially testosterone, via its effects on androgen receptors, shifts the immune system from Th1 or cell mediated immunity to Th2 or humoral mediated immunity.

Th1 immunity is when cells create markers that produce inflammation (like TNFa and IL-6). Every disease listed above is Th1 mediated.

But testosterone helps shift the immune system back to Th2 immunity, which is more involved with anti-inflammatory components like cytokines.

Even conventional medicine and research recognizes how significant this is. Testosterone doesn’t just improve autoimmune diseases from a symptom perspective, but improves a person’s overall quality of life…dramatically.

However, testosterone therapy not only improves autoimmune disease symptoms, but also provides added benefits such as improved sexual function, improved body composition, etc.

Traish et al, 2018

Combining testosterone with other immunomodulating agents like Low Dose Naltrexone (plus lifestyle and diet measures), often allows patients suffering from autoimmune issues such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, psoriasis, etc. to heal and restore their health and quality of life before they end up on immunosuppressants.
